We’ve seen amazing support since the earthquake. Most disaster experts say that in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, raising funds is the most efficient way for people to contribute to the cause. Later, as things calm, the food and blanket drives will be needed. But for now, money is efficient. On this page you’ll find a list of amazing international relief organizations that are accepting donations. You will also find a listing of New Orleans’ area churches with large Haitian congregations. The Haitian New Orleanian community has a long history of support their families and friends back in Haiti. Even before the earthquake, Haitian Americans typically wired money home to help support their families. NewOrleansHaiti.org will help our community to stay connected to its homeland.
Any amount of money will go a long way. After all, most Haitians live on $2 a day. We’ve listed many of the churches in the area. They’ll act as stewards of money. But know that as things calm, our family and friends in Haiti are going to have a tough road and they’ll need things that international aid organizations may not have programs to provide. A direct way to get resources to Haitians who have connections to New Orleans is through these churches.
We have a word in Haiti: Konbit. It describes people working together. We’re in this together. We hope you’ll help and even attend a service at one of these churches.
